HIP HOP DEFINED (and fly sneakers)

I usually leave sneakers and all things related to sneakers to Clippster.  That is his realm; and, I dare not step in it. This post is a rare exception.

Background….

I am very clear about my musical expertise. I am a die hard R&B fanatic. 70’s and 80’ R&B is all I need to survive. However, my second favorite genre is hip-hop, specifically  old school hip-hop. No disrespect to today’s artists intended.

Behold Longer Hemlines - Celebs Skip Sexy For Ladylike

While Carey Mulligan is the epitome of ladylike chic right now, other celebs are following suit and dropping their hemlines. Sexy will always be a mainstay, but at the moment, a more demure silhouette is taking the style reigns. Everyone from Michelle Williams to Minnie Driver to Kate Bosworth have recently been spotted on the red carpet in below-the-knee frocks. But don't be mistaken; just because the new hemline is long doesn't mean it's blah. No way! Step inside to see 15 celebs who have taken a liking to the longer hemline trend.

Trend Alert: Retro Rose Dresses

Trust Mad Men's Christina Hendricks to sport a throwback-inspired trend. Her retro rose dress is spot-on vintage glam. Sure, it's a bold print, but that's the way it's made to be worn - the '50s femme never makes apologies for her ladylike print, or her curves. Now, it's your turn: sport the style with the same flirty florals, and if it's chilly out, add tights and booties for a modern edge.

Matthew Williamson Will Slash Prices For a New Diffusion Line!

Come Fall 2011, Matthew Williamson fans will be able to score his fantastic prints at lower prices. Muse by Matthew Williamson - the working name of the line - will range from $474 for a day dress to $790 for evening gowns. "It's for a woman who wants feel-good clothing, and it will have the same aesthetic, DNA and surface signatures as the main line," said Joseph Velosa, the designer's business partner. Look at it like the younger sister, much like Marc by Marc Jacobs is to Marc Jacobs.

The administrators of the manufacturing group they will work with have nothing but praise for Matthew: "His own creative ability, together with the highly identifiable brand DNA of his main-line brand, has, without any doubt, created an innovative luxury concept in the fashion market, which we now believe is ready for a global diffusion line." The plan is to create two collections per year. Are you interested or is it still too pricey?

Fashion Week Handbags: Hermes Spring 2011

It has often seemed as though Jean Paul Gaultier’s favorite thing to do on the Hermes runway is riff on the classics that make the brand so iconic and successful, and Hermes Spring 2011, Gaultier’s swan song with the brand, was a horse-tastic, S&M-tinged ode to exactly those tendencies. The handbags mostly stayed clear of the psychosexual leanings of clothing, but that isn’t to say that they weren’t interesting.

If I told you that the bag to the left were actually made of real, honest-to-God crocodile, would you think I was lying? I wouldn’t blame you if you did, because I’ve never before encountered crocodile skin that I could see through, but Style.com seems to indicate that it’s the genuine article. From that to picnic basket and fanny pack Kellys and tiny Birkins hanging from cuff bracelets, it seems as though Gaultier had a fine time with his last trip through the Hermes accessory archives.

Fashion Week Handbags: Miu Miu Spring 2011

Do you like leather applique? Bright colors? Cutout straps? Then step right up, because Miu Miu’s carnival game of a Spring 2011 handbag collection is a little bit daffy, but maybe also a little bit inspired. Miuccia, after all, does not make missteps.

Perhaps most important, I can easily imagine the Miu Miu girl wearing these designs. They’re irreverent, girlish and perhaps a little bit ironic, but they also have a very, very clear point of view and will stand out in a crowd. The appliques range from feminine to rock-influenced, so if you’re under the age of 30, enjoy bright colors and have some extra income, you might find a great, if slightly odd, addition to your wardrobe in this collection. If you don’t fit that slim category, I’m not sure you’ll find anything relevant in these bags.
